Walker helping online retailers to slash their use of plastic packaging
Walker Logistics has announced that it has eliminated the use of plastic-based void-fill materials in over 90 per cent of the orders that it processes at its Berkshire-based multi-client fulfillment facility.
Commonly used void fillers such as plastic bubble-wrap, air-filled protective cushions and polystyrene chips have been replaced by environmentally friendly packaging material which Walker produces on-site by recycling its clients’ own in-bound transit packaging.
William Walker, sales director of Walker Logistics, comments: “By turning in-bound transit packaging waste into protective void-fill material that we use to protect outgoing orders, we are not only reusing waste products but also avoiding other less environmentally-friendly forms of transit packaging.”
It is estimated that in the last year alone some 78 tonnes (6.5 tonnes per month) of packaging waste has been diverted from landfill thanks to Walker’s clients’ enthusiastic uptake of the eco-friendly packaging, which is produced using low energy, state-of-the-art shredding machinery.
William Walker adds: “For online retailers striking a balance between the need to protect products in transit with environmental responsibility is essential. A recent study carried out by a leading delivery management company found that 75% of consumers want e-retailers to minimise parcel packaging waste and use environmentally friendly materials when packing their online purchases.
“And plenty of shoppers whose goods arrive packaged in a non-eco-friendly way often choose to leave bad reviews or tell their friends, while some even decide not to purchase from the company again.”
